"Not many bands sing the praises of wind-up chattering teeth, but Hot Club De Paris have breached brand new territory with this piece of pulsing Toys 'R' Us-inspired new wave thats twitchier than a mosquito's tweeter. It also features a sterling cover of Paul Simon's 'You Can Call Me Al' on the B-side, with some first-rate whistling work. Been taking lessons from Peter Bjorn and John, boys?" [LC NME SIngle Review]
Hot Club de Paris return with the final single from their debut album
'Drop It Til It Pops' on June 11. 'Clockwork Toy' was always a
front-runner in the singles department. A late addition to the album,
it was the last song the band wrote before recording was complete.
It opens with the fastest and most fiddly guitar lick on the planet,
which deserves to be honored in every guitar shop in the land by young
Hot Club fans as they take their new instruments for a test drive. Of
course, if you have been wise enough to see them live over the last
whirlwind, non-stop touring year, you've probably joined many a
gob-smacked observer wondering just how Matthew nails all 3 minutes of
said lick.
'Clockwork Toy', according to singer Paul, is "a song about a
clockwork circus that has ground to a halt but is slowly coming back
to life. A thinly veiled but motivating metaphor for feeling
unfulfilled and deciding to do something about it)". Overall though,
it's as close to a throbbing dance tune that an experimental math pop
band like Hot Club de Paris are going to get (without the aid of the
Metronomy Remix of course). The almost dancehall drum beat overlaid
with said super fast, super melodic guitar lick and vocal harmonies
cannot fail to get indie dancefloors swarming. Be sure to keep and eye
out for the promo video by Cannes-nominated director Joe Tucker
featuring pro-skater Howard Cooke (Vans, Heroin, Independent).
And where to start on the B sides? A completely genius cover of Paul
Simon's unquestionably awesome 1986 single from his seminal solo album
'Graceland'. Anyone who's had the pleasure of meeting these three
young men will know how far and wide their musical discernment spans,
both individually and mutually. Needless to say, this classic cover
was a labour of love all round.
Fellow tour mates, GoodBooks have supplied remix services on the
limited edition second 7" along with proponents of laid-back electro,
Metronomy.
You can't have failed to notice the extent to which Hot Club de Paris
have toured since 2005, but it seems there's just no stopping them.
After two splendid Camden Crawl shows (one, a very hot and very sweaty
headliner, the other to a packed-out KOKO), they're heading to The
Great Escape in Brighton to play with CSS at Concorde 2 before
embarking on their May tour with GoodBooks and Safetyword:
- Clockwork Toy
- Call Me Al
