'psychologist' means: 'one who studies the breath, spirit, or soul'
Psychologist is an experimental pop music project started by Iain Woods, who started writing songs as a stoned teenager in Coventry. The bleak tendencies of the songwriting probably owes a lot to the grey, industrial-hangover that is Coventry and the midlands as a whole. The project really got going when Iain moved to Brighton to study Sculpture and met engineer, producer and all-round mecha-geek Lewis Bellwood, who was a party-kid who liked to get arty. Iain was an arty kid with a penchant for a party, so they decided henceforth to make music that sounded like an arty party.
When the CD they released as an 'invisible sculpture' as part of Iain's final degree show went on to win the Channel 4 music talent award in 2008, they were asked to perform live in support of the award. Lying through his teeth, Iain told them that yes, he did indeed have a band. Upon putting the phone down, he leant out the window to see two beautiful sprites with volumes hair playing beautiful harmonies on the violin, so he recruited them to make the live show look and sound a bit good.
The motley crew all moved to the big smoke after graduating and pursued various proper jobs whilst putting on parties and gigs for a year or two, and meeting sexy beat fiddler Kwesi Darko along the way, who nowadays helps them bring their show to life.
They signed to Moshi Moshi imprint Not Even to release the two-part 'Epidural Collection' this year and are currently hard at work on creating their debut album, which will no doubt be as stylistically spasticated as their previous efforts.
The song 'propeller' is based on death-threats written on the back of chintzy Christmas cards by a mental health patient.
